AI in Sports and Fitness
US Ski and Snowboard athletes use Google Cloud AI to refine Olympic techniques. Snowboarder Maddie Mastro and other Team USA athletes are training with computer vision models built by Google DeepMind that analyze 3D body positioning and movement in real time. The AI identified that Mastro's arm angle on landing was suboptimal for judging, allowing her to make targeted adjustments days before competing at Milan Cortina.
Team USA speedskaters and bobsledders deploy AI aerodynamics tools at Winter Olympics. The speedskating team uses Slippery Fish, an AI app that creates digital avatars to simulate how different body postures affect drag, replacing expensive wind tunnel visits. The bobsled team partnered with Snowflake to analyze 100 data points per second from accelerometers and gyroscopes, enabling coaches to optimize athlete positioning and sled timing between runs.
Shoot 360 and LA Fitness pilot gamified basketball courts in three states. The partnership is installing proprietary tech-driven basketball courts that combine machine vision and real-time analytics to measure shooting arc, passing velocity, and reaction time like NBA-caliber facilities. Six gyms across California, Oregon, and Washington will debut the immersive experience with global competitive leagues launching soon.
Somnee AI sleep headband wins NFLPA Pitch Day recognition. Founded by UC Berkeley neuroscientists including Dr. Matt Walker, the AI-powered headband uses EEG sensors to help users fall asleep faster and improve sleep quality. The NFLPA win comes after the NBA announced it would invest in the company, which raised $10M last year and recently launched its second-generation device.
Fitbit's Gemini-powered AI coach expands to iPhone and five new countries. The conversational AI health assistant now available to iOS users requires a Fitbit Premium subscription and analyzes sleep, heart rate, activity, and readiness data to build dynamic training plans. The coach adjusts recommendations in real time and supports natural language queries about recovery, marathon training, and personalized fitness guidance.
Kasi launches real-time AI run coaching to compete with Runna. The new app from renowned running coach Dr. Jason Karp provides in-workout audio feedback based on pace and heart rate, guiding runners through lactate threshold workouts and speed intervals. Built on Karp's coaching methodology rather than pure machine learning, Kasi also enables human coaches to observe workouts and provide real-time corrections through the platform.
