Prompt of the Day

Using Deep Research

For our latest prompt, we’re going to take a deep dive into Gemini’s Deep Research tool. It is free and available through Google at https://gemini.google.com/app. For this exercise, I asked it to organize a community event – specifically, a 5K walk/run in Del Mar, CA. Here's a behind the scenes look at how it worked.

My initial request was straightforward: I asked for a detailed plan covering all aspects of organizing a 5K in Del Mar, including the necessary approvals, logistical considerations, volunteer recruitment, registration management, and promotional strategies.

The AI then went to work, accessing information from various online sources related to Del Mar event planning, and sifting through numerous web pages to find the answers to the questions I asked.

Here’s the process it followed:

  1. Deconstructing the Request: The AI first broke down my broad request into specific areas of focus. It identified the key elements of event planning that needed to be addressed, such as permits, route planning, volunteer engagement, and so on.

  2. Information Gathering: Next, it scanned the provided research materials – a collection of web pages – looking for content relevant to each of these areas, specifically within the context of Del Mar. This involved pinpointing crucial details like contact information for the City of Del Mar, the types of permits required for public events, and the steps involved in the application processes . It also looked for information on logistical considerations, volunteer strategies, registration platforms, and promotional tools and ideas.

  3. Structuring the Findings: Once it had gathered all the relevant pieces of information, the AI organized it into a logical and easy-to-follow report. It grouped related details under headings and subheadings, creating a structured guide that covers the entire event planning process from start to finish.

  4. Adding Credibility with Citations: To ensure the accuracy and verifiability of the information, the AI included citations throughout the report, referencing the specific web pages where each piece of information was found . This allows anyone to easily check the original sources.

  5. Polishing for Clarity: Finally, the AI refined the language and formatting of the report to make it as clear and professional as possible, using bullet points and a well-defined structure to enhance readability.

While it couldn’t replicate the expertise and skills of an experienced race director, I found it to be an incredibly efficient way to gather a large amount of information and structure it into a useful resource. You can see the final report here. It did a great job of explaining and providing permitting resources, and we could have dug deeper into any other component of the planning process.

What really takes Gemini to the next level however, is that once you are done, you can create an Audio Overview of your research report to listen to. Better yet, upload your report to Notebook LM and have it made into a podcast you can interact with.
